Dr Charles Merewether is an art historian, writer and curator. He was recently Consultant for the Emirates Foundation in the UAE. Between 2004-206 he was Artistic Director & Curator of the 2006 Biennale of Sydney and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Cross Cultural Research, Australian National University., Born in Scotland and educated in Australia, he was Collections Curator at the Getty Center in Los Angeles (1994-2004) and has taught at the University of Sydney, Universidad Autonoma in Barcelona, the Ibero-Americana in Mexico City and University of Southern California and been recipient of various Fellowships including at Yale University and Japan . His most recent publications include General and Commissioning Editor, Zones of Contact (Biennale of Sydney 2006) Editor, The Archive (Editor, M.I.T Press & Whitechapel Gallery, London 2006), Editor, Ai Weiwei: Beijng 1993-2003 (Timezone8, Beijing 2003). His most publication is the edited volume with Rika Hiro Art, Anti-Art, Non-Art: Experimentations in the Public Sphere in Postwar Japan 1950-1970, published by the Getty Center, Los Angeles in 2007 in association with an exhibition of the same name. He is currently writing a book on the cultural history of looting, and another on postwar photography in Japan and preparing an exhibition on Ai Weiwei.
