Rachel Wilberforce
Concept, Initiator & artist
Rachel Wilberforce conceived of Bound with the intention of marking the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade with an exhibition on contemporary slavery. Wilberforce has assisted on large scale projects including site specific exhibition GARDEN, Medieval Castle Vault, Southampton, 2004; PARANOIA at Leeds City Arts Gallery, Focal Point Gallery, Southend, Freud Museum, London, 2006/07; IN FOCUS – THIS DAY at Tate Modern, London, UNDO at Dazed Gallery, London, RECOGNISE at Contemporary Art Platform, London, 2007…
Wilberforce’s work focuses on social, political and geographical situations in responding to issues of identity, media and cultural indoctrination predominantly through constructed images. Her more recent work extends these concerns through non constructed images and centres around exile, asylum and enslavement by exploring issues of representation, belief, gender, social behaviour and cultural integration. In so doing, the viewer is invited to contemplate the issues and responses presented in the work from a perspective other than from in front of a television screen.
Her work has been shown internationally including: GARDEN, Medieval Castle Vault, Southampton, UK 2004; HOPE & GLORY, Chaos Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia, 2005; CONSPIRACY, prog:ME, Centro Cultural Telemar, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2005, PARANOIA, Leeds City Art Gallery, Focal Point Gallery, Freud Museum London, 2006/07; THIS DAY, Tate Modern, 2007; UNDO, Dazed Gallery, London, 2007; RECOGNISE, Contemporary Art Platform, London, 2007; CRIMES & SPLENDORS, Ron Mandos Gallery, Amsterdam, 2007; ZAPPING, Grafisch Atelier, Eindhoven, The Netherlands, 2007…
